FOUNDATION HALLS Big Hearts It’s not enough for A&G Management to rent apartment homes to families in 13 communities throughout Anne Arundel, Baltimore and Howard counties. They want to keep these families healthy, too. In February, American Heart Month, the company decided to tie in its third-ﬂoor apartments as a clever way to get healthy. “Climbing stairs burns calories,” says Kathie Dzbinski of A&G Management. “We found information that walking up stairs 30 minutes each day burns up approximately 300 calories and gives your heart a great workout.” A&G did more than hand out information. It gave pedometers and bottled water to their residents, future residents and staff. University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center joined in the campaign, providing materials about heart awareness events being sponsored in the area in February. HEALING HANDS I n his opening remarks at the dedication of the Healing Hands Wall on June 11, Senator Francis X. Kelly Jr., chairman of the operating board of University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center, said, “It takes excellent doctors to have an excellent hospital.” To celebrate the culture of outstanding physician care, a hallmark of UM St. Joseph Medical Center, funds were raised to create the Healing Hands Guild that will annually honor selected physicians for their commitment to loving service, clinical excellence and leadership. Nearly 350 people were in attendance in the hospital’s rotunda to celebrate the inaugural class of 2013, which includes 15 physicians who embody reverence, integrity, compassion and excellence. It was an emotional evening as Mohan Suntha, MD, MBA, president and CEO, highlighted the bright future of UM St. Joseph Medical Center, followed by each physician giving personal reﬂections. After the induction, the Healing Hands Wall was uncovered to reveal a bronze casting of each physician’s hands, along with a short biography of his or her most important contributions. Senator Kelly closed his remarks by expressing his admiration for these doctors who choose to practice in a faith-based setting, asking “God’s blessing on these ﬁne physicians that they may continue to prosper in good health and peace of mind.” Inaugural Class of the Healing Hands Guild Harry A.
