A HEALTHY START Peace of Mind UM HMH Behavioral Health Services offers Intensive Outpatient Program A ll across the United States, the need for mental health services is on the rise. Here in Harford County, statistics for suicide, anxiety disorders and mental health-related emergency visits are higher than those of the state overall; keeping up with the number of cases is a huge challenge. Fortunately, there is a unique, local program that helps to address the needs in our community. Led by a team of psychiatrists, social workers, nurses, occupational therapists and other specialty clinicians, the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at University of Maryland Harford Memorial Hospital (UM HMH) provides short-term group therapy. Best suited for the program are people who are experiencing emotional or behavioral issues that are interfering with daily life and temporarily require more care than traditional outpatient counseling can provide. IOP participants attend intensive group therapy sessions for three hours a day, three days a week, while the specific length of treatment varies based on each individual's needs. The highly beneficial group therapy environment helps people explore their patterns of thinking and behaving and learn that they are not alone in their life experiences. It provides a unique opportunity for them to learn about how they understand and interact with others, too. "Our goal is to provide a compassionate, person-centered environment where personal struggles and difficulties are transformed into opportunities for growth and healing," Llewellyn says.
