When Seamus Dever, ’97 BA, arrived at NAU, he was 17 and had never taken an acting class. Today, he is seen by millions of people every week on ABC’s Castle playing homicide detective Kevin Ryan. here’s how NAU helped him get from point A to point LA.

I showed up at previews with the intention of being involved with either the music or theater department. I talked to Mac Groves, who ended up being my advisor, about the classes I could take, and I sort of just dove in. I don’t know why I never had any hesitance about what I was going to do. I wasn’t into taking classes that had nothing to do with what I was going to spend my life doing. Fortunately, my first year, the music and theater departments were collaborating on a musical, which didn’t happen very often and I don’t know if it has happened since. I was the only freshman male cast in the musical and it gave me encouragement early on. I never looked back.
Q. When you set out to take acting at NAu, was it already your chosen career?
