HERBERT ALTON GREGG
retired coach and athletic director, March 15
Coach Gregg coached the Lumberjack basketball teams from 1950 to 1974 and was the winningest coach in school history, winning six conference championships in the New Mexico and Frontier conferences and compiling a 290-288 career record. He also coached baseball and golf, was an assistant football coach for four years and served as athletic director. Coach Gregg was inducted into the Arizona Basketball Hall of Fame in 1970. He was inducted into the original NAU Hall of Fame class in 1981. Coach Gregg was born in Tiffany Springs, Mo., June 14, 1918. He passed away after complications from hip surgery March 15, 2012. Coach Gregg played basketball and baseball at Missouri University, where he majored in education. He also played baseball for the Pittsburgh Pirates farm system in 1942. After college, he joined the U.S. Navy and received a Silver Star and two Bronze Stars for his actions in the South Pacific. After retiring from NAU in 1983, he spent his days golfing and enjoying time with family and friends.
