Former vice president and professor, May 10
Dr. Staires was born Dec. 25, 1925, in Alton, Mo. He died May 10, 2012, in Sun City. At 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and spent 24 months in the Pacific Theater. Upon returning from the war, he enrolled in college using the G.I. Bill and earned three degrees, including a doctorate in education from the University of Missouri at Columbia. Dr. Staires spent more than 40 years in public education, serving as high school principal and superintendent of schools in southern Kansas City and dean of education at Central Missouri State University before coming to NAU, where he was vice president for administration services and professor of educational administration. He retired in 1990. Dr. Staires was an avid outdoorsman and never tired of hunting and fishing with his entire family. He was active in scouting and was the founding chairman of the Arrowhead District, a member of the Kansas City Council and the National Council of Boy Scouts, and served as the president of the Grand Canyon Council.
DR. JOEL OLSON
Associate professor, Department of Politics and International Affairs, March 29
Dr. Olson died unexpectedly while in Nottingham, England. He was on an international teaching exchange at the University of Alicante in Spain and had just presented a paper at the University of Nottingham on March 28. Born Nov. 4, 1967, Dr. Olson moved to Phoenix in 1979, attended Thunderbird High School and went on to graduate from ASU with a degree in political science. After receiving his PhD. in political science from the University of Minnesota, he taught courses at both the undergraduate and graduate level. Dr. Olson began his career at NAU in 2003 as an assistant professor and was promoted to associate professor in 2008. In 2004, he published a book titled The Abolition of White Democracy and was working on another book about the political theory of extremism in the U.S. Dr. Olson was a role model to many in the activist community and was respected and loved by his students, receiving the Outstanding Teaching Award for the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences in 2005.
