Redefining Career
Preparations for
Health Professionals
What Northern Arizona University and the
University of Arizona College of Medicine have
done through their partnership in downtown
Phoenix is redefine career preparation for our
next generation of health professionals.
Students from three high-demand fields at
the two universities are pursuing degrees in
a remarkable building that by its very design
integrates technological advances with faceto-face interactions. Medical students do not
often learn in the same labs and hallways as
physician assistants and physical therapists,
but on the Phoenix Biomedical Campus they
are forming relationships that will serve them
throughout their careers.
This model of learning acknowledges both
the changing nature of education and the pressing needs of the state. Developing a deeper
pool of college-educated workers is critical for
Arizona’s economic well-being, and doing so
requires a willingness to try new approaches
that attract and retain more students. No less
important to the state’s long-term health is the
provision of high-quality medical care.
Meet some of the students taking part in this
exciting and important venture in this issue of
Pine. You also will meet DeeAnn Palin, senior
vice president of operations for the Phoenix
Suns and Phoenix Mercury, and Phil Tavasci,
the new Alumni Association board president.
As always, I am hopeful that you will visit
your alma mater for this year’s homecoming
events, including the parade in downtown
Flagstaff and the Big Sky Conference football
matchup with Idaho State on Oct. 19.
I look forward to meeting with you.
Sincerely,
A MESSAGE
FROM YOUR
ALUMNI BOARD
PRESIDENT
NAU has played a fundamental role in shaping our lives
both personally and professionally. I earned my degree
in 2003, and it is here that I formed lifelong connections.
After residing in Phoenix for more than a decade, I find
myself frequently remembering my NAU days—biking
around campus between classes, the smell of the
mountain air and awaiting the snowboarding season.
Now, as the 2013–14 president of the NAU Alumni
Association board of directors, I have the great honor
of serving as a chief advocate for my alma mater.
Our key goal is alumni outreach. We look forward to
your participation at upcoming events; you can also
connect with us through our website and social media,
or even volunteer your time. In order for us to best
serve you and keep you abreast of alumni events
and news, please email us your up-to-date contact
information, and we’ll make sure to keep you informed.
NAU is stronger than ever with 137,000 Lumberjacks
making differences in their communities and adding
more than 4,000 new graduates to the alumni ranks in
May. I invite you to come see these changes at homecoming, Oct. 19, where the theme will be “Forever Blue.”
I look forward to hearing your NAU story at one of
our upcoming events or online through our digital
publications, Alumni Facetime and Pine.
Go Lumberjacks!
