hollering Woo-ee!
The Western Undergraduate Exchange
Program, or WUE (pronounced woo–ee) for
short, enables thousands of students each year
to attend schools outside of their home states at
a fraction of standard nonresident rates. A student from one of the 15 participating states who
meets university admissions requirements can
receive a tuition rate of 1.5 times the cost of instate tuition. For the NAU 2012–13 academic year,
this translates to $12,680, a considerable savings
of $8,128 from nonresident rates. Factoring in the
guaranteed, four-year fixed tuition rate further
sweetens the deal.
Established in 1987 by the Western Interstate
Commission for Higher Education, the WUE
Program is now the largest of its kind in the nation.

It was designed to improve access to educational opportunities and programs that might not
be available in a student’s home state, as well
as to help universities reach enrollment targets.
Currently, more than 140 educational institutions
participate.
Arizona holds the program’s largest registration,
enrolling 5,946 out-of state students for the fall
2012 semester. With 26 institutions within its borders, Arizona also boasts the largest number of
WUE affiliate locations of any state. WUE students
can pursue almost any major at NAU, with the
exception of dental hygiene and nursing, which
are in high demand by in-state residents.
NAU remains a favorite for WUE students set on
Arizona, and draws in more attendance than ASU
or UA combined. NAU’s Flagstaff campus invites
all participating majors, offering a true first-year
experience for WUE students.
Because of the WUE Program, thousands of
out-of-state graduates have shared in the opportunity to attend NAU and take in all Flagstaff has
to offer—at an affordable cost to boot. Blake
Schraufnagel, ’10 BS, of Parker, Colo., spent
two years in the WUE Program. He shared with
Northern Arizona News that his campus visit
was “an eye-opening and personally liberating
experience” that encouraged him to become a
Lumberjack for life.
