COVER LINKS FEATURED A Crescendo of Philanthropy Ed Kurtz, PhD, a former Arizona plant physiologist, chose to retire in Flagstaff, as many do, because of the beautiful location and active lifestyle. But there's another reason Dr. Kurtz admires the university town. "Northern Arizona University prioritizes the development of strong relationships between faculty and staff, and this is very important to me." An orchestra and opera aficionado, Dr. Kurtz's current giving evolved into a planned gift, and he became a Heritage Society Member in recognition of his future support. "His gift is easily compared to the notion of crescendo," says Todd Sullivan, director of the NAU School of Music. "First, he believed in the School of Music's programs and students; those beliefs led to many years of consistent support; and ultimately, his loyalty led to a planned gift which will benefit musicians forever." Visionary donors like Dr. Kurtz transform the atmosphere of the university, enabling their gifts to benefit future generations. The following gifts grant membership into the Heritage Society: those made through a will or living trust, beneficiary designations, charitable trusts or gift annuities, life estate agreements or gifts of life insurance. An Inside Look at NAU with LinkedIn Know someone who is considering attending NAU? Point them toward the NAU LinkedIn University page. Similar to a Facebook page, it allows you to learn about community happenings, as well as network with fellow Lumberjacks. With the Explore Careers feature, users can target the profiles of more than 47,000 NAU graduates, fine-tuning networking searches with geography-, industry- and even company-specific parameters. Students can find useful guidance in identifying the career paths of those who have attended NAU, and alumni can search for former classmates and friends. As an estimated 30 million LinkedIn accounts (or 13 percent of the total network) are held by college students or recent graduates, it's no surprise that the social platform has developed university pages to help connect a new generation of career professionals.
