COVER LINKS FEATURED How do you build a brighter future? One student at a time. With the commitment of dedicated faculty, innovations in research and an emphasis on personalized learning, a transformation is underway at Northern Arizona University. The Campaign for NAU was publicly launched in the fall, after a four-year "quiet phase" that secured close to $55 million in gifts and pledges. The goal is to raise $100 million by July 2016. It is a campaign to recommit to the core values of the institution, an identity forged by more than 100 years of distinction in education. Dubbed "Only at NAU," the campaign has identified critical priorities, including growing scholarships and programs that promote student success; investing in and supporting faculty excellence; strengthening research opportunities for both students and faculty; and enhancing the athletics program and supporting student-athletes. SPOTLIGHT CONNECTIONS Q&A Supporting Student Success The pivotal role of the campaign is to create more opportunities for students, and with a goal of raising $60 million for scholarships and student programs alone, an emphasis on student support is clear. Through record enrollment growth-reaching 26,002 in fall 2013-it has become more critical than ever to continue to fund and develop the support programs students require to be successful. "One of the things the university has long been known for is giving students a chance, particularly to become socially mobile," says Mason Gerety, vice president for University Advancement. "A huge component of social mobility is the bachelor's degree. The fact that 42 percent of NAU's student population is comprised of first-generation college students speaks to how we think about access and opportunity." With a vigilant eye on state and national employment demands, NAU has nearly doubled the number of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) graduates in recent years. Establishment of new degrees, such as the physician's assistant and occupational therapy doctorate programs at the Phoenix Biomedical Campus are helping to meet statewide demand and prepare students for successful careers. "NAU is committed to an environment of living and learning that simply cannot be found elsewhere. Preserving that environment will require tremendous resources, which means that the success of this comprehensive fundraising campaign is critical to our future." - John Haeger, President of Northern Arizona University nau.edu/alumni PINE SPRING 2014 PG 7 https://www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/mcmurry/pine_2013fall/#/6 http://www.nau.edu/alumni
