You know—VIN (vehicle identi cation number), IV (intravenous) or IRMC (Indiana Regional Medical Center) to name a few. Well, here are a couple you may want to add to your list: IGRT and IMRT. To understand them is to open a door to a re ned approach to cancer treatment at the Herbert L. Hanna, MD, Center for Oncology Care at IRMC. With the recent installation of image guided radiation therapy (IGRT) technology at the Hanna Cancer Center, we now have the ability to more accurately identify the intended target of the radiation beam: the tumor volume. roughout the course of treatment, the tumor’s size and shape in the body may change. e new cone beam IGRT o ers radiation oncologist Ali M. Tunio, M.D., Ph.D., and the assisting therapist an important 3-D view of the tumor’s potential changes just prior to the daily treatment. Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) works in combination with IGRT to increase precision, allowing for higher doses of radiation, exactly targeted, to bring the most bene t while reducing radiation exposure to surrounding critical structures and tissues. Beam Me Up W The Most Accurate Option Previously, two-dimensional tumor localization techniques limited the clinician’s ability to visualize the tumor’s reaction to the radiation treatment. IGRT with IMRT, also known as IG-IMRT, has eliminated many of these challenges for the oncology team. e radiation cone beam is actually shaped to conform to the anatomy of the tumor. Using Varian Clinac’s® On-Board Imager™, high-resolution computerized tomographic images pinpoint the tumor site. IG-IMRT targets the tumor by shape through the imager. Given that treatment can cover a span of as many as 45 visits, IGRT is the most accurate and reliable means of delivering e ective treatment to the patient every day. is state-of-the-art technology is about doing the exact same thing over and over again during the treatment process. It is widely known that success in radiation therapy treatment requires exact re-enactment of proper alignment of the patient and the radiation beam to the target area. With such improved accuracy, IG-IMRT o ers the potential for better disease control, reduced exposure to unintended tissue and an enhanced overall quality of care. ● Start Fighting Back For more information on these new radiation technologies, please contact the Herbert L.
