Even so, the images themselves come as a revelation. Granted nearly unfettered access to the studios, an unprecedented privilege among the media, some Magnum photographers even formed intimate personal relationships with their famous subjects: Robert Capa became Ingrid Bergman’s lover; Eve Arnold befriended Marilyn Monroe; Dennis Stock was asked by Nicholas Ray to be James Dean’s dialogue coach. More importantly, the freedom and independence granted Magnum’s shooters enabled them to capture some of cinema’s most illuminating and enduring images. This fall, 146 of these images — some rarely seen, some world famous — are on display at Italy’s National Museum of Cinema in Turin as part of its exhibition “Magnum on Set: Cinema Seen by Great Photographers.” For those who can’t make it to Turin, Silvana Editoriale is publishing a big, glossy companion guide, which will include a DVD. t h e r i t z - c a r lt o n m a g a z i n e 65
