using the same techniques and materials as the original artists. During the restoration planning, it was discovered that two ornate chandeliers designed for the lobby were never actually made — an apparent victim of the Depression. Working from the original drawings, craftsmen built them to order, and they now hang above the lobby’s second-floor pedestrian bridges; they can be seen in our story on page 92. The building’s most popular destination, the Observatory on the 86th floor, from which on a clear day five different states are visible, also underwent a substantial face lift, with refurbished floors and wainscoting. It was here that photographer Kayt Jones, who had flown in from L.A. for the shoot, met her most formidable challenge. Photographing summer dresses during New York’s late spring always promised a challenge. But the light drizzle that fell onto the city streets at ground level one March morning was, a quarter-mile farther up, a raging blizzard that encircled the Observatory. Jones and her team prevailed, and we can now suggest that the ’30s-influenced evening dresses we selected are not only appropriate for summer balls but also for winter cruises and other arctic expeditions. JEREMY MURCH (“Castles, Sand & Sea,” page 72), based in London, traveled to Portugal to document Sintra and the stunning Cascais coast for this issue. His work has been included in shows at the Barbican and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. His commercial clients include Nike, Knoll, MasterCard and the BBC. Editorially, his work has appeared in such diverse publications as Dwell, British Vogue and The New York Times Magazine. FRANK HERFORT (“History & Glitz,” page 80) is a German photographer who splits his time between Germany and Russia, where for this issue he documented Moscow’s rich cultural scene, from the Cold War Museum to the Moscow House of Photography. He has had solo exhibitions of his work mounted in Hamburg, London and Paris, and has been included in group shows worldwide. t h e r i t z - c a r lt o n m a g a z i n e 23 http://www.baltica.com
