Editor’s LEttEr E The Pleasures of summer Every year come late July, I am eager to escape the heat and humidity of Washington, D.C., for the shores of New England. I spent my summers growing up in a small community on the Long Island Sound in Connecticut, where the beaches are far from glamorous and there is no night life — but it is quiet, peaceful and simply beautiful. I never appreciated this small-town charm until moving to a big city and longing for my old summer escape. Now with two small children, I get to live my childhood summers all over again. The ice cream truck that has been dishing out sweet, creamy cones since I was 3 years old now serves my kids (and “Daisy” is still the driver). The seaglass collection I started years ago keeps growing, and I cherish it even more when I see my daughter become excited as she finds the perfect piece to add to our trove. And I love watching the tide schedules to plan our family’s lateafternoon walks along the glistening shoreline. There’s something about the beach during summer that feels perfect. I just returned from The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel in Southern California, and I was in heaven watching the sun set from my balcony overlooking the Pacific Ocean. More adventurous visitors, though, should take advantage of the area’s world-famous waves and try that quintessential California experience: surfing. Even a first-timer can join the fun thanks to the resort’s surf school. Not convinced? Read “Wave Appeal” (page 66), which follows one of our writers as she learns to “hang 10” with the golden boys of summer. If you have a more exotic beach experience in mind, we’re happy to provide some ideas. Consider Sintra, Portugal (“Castles, Sand & Sea” page 72) — a dreamy blend of European sophistication and seaside charm. Of course, you can always opt for the classic beach getaway in the Hawaiian Islands (“Falling in Love With … Hawaii,” page 28). This issue of The Ritz-Carlton Magazine is all about the pleasures of summer, from shopping and fashion in New York City to bold art in Moscow and exquisite cheeses and wines in Toronto.
