President’s Letter EscapE and Enjoy Luxury meets heri tage Bottom: Looking for an off-the-radar destination that combines European culture and resort amenities? W When I am traveling on business — which is more often than not — I usually stop at the airport newsstand to look for the latest magazines, especially the many glossies that specialize in travel stories. Reading about the world’s great cities and hidden getaways is one of my favorite ways to pass the time on a long flight, and it’s one of the reasons I really enjoy each issue of The Ritz-Carlton Magazine. This summer issue is no exception, as it highlights two of my favorite destinations: Portugal and Russia — home to two magnificent Ritz-Carlton hotels. Discover Sintra, a World Heritage site. The Portuguese town has everything a visitor to Europe will appreciate: cobbled streets, a beautiful cathedral, alfresco dining, shops with local handmade pottery and linens, and an impressive castle standing high above the village. After a full day of exploring Sintra, travel a few miles to Penha Longa Hotel, Spa & Golf Resort, where the area’s ancient ruins and rolling countryside have been beautifully preserved — and complemented by a spectacular spa and challenging championship golf course. Travelers in search of art, culture and cosmopolitan energy will find much more than the Kremlin in Moscow. A vibrant late-night scene is emerging, and it can be enjoyed with style at the rooftop O2 Lounge at The Ritz-Carlton, Moscow, which offers breathtaking views of Red Square and has become the “see and be seen” place in the city. This issue also features the scenic Southern California town of Laguna Niguel, where resort guests at The Ritz-Carlton can spend hours sipping local wines and watching the surfers who begin at dawn.
