To achieve these traditional effects, Neal uses contemporary tools: “I scan my doodles, sketches and paintings into the computer and play until I have a finished picture,” he explains. Like many illustrators working in a painterly idiom, he straddles an undefined line between the art world and the commercial marketplace. “The difference between design and art is that design has to work. It’s the same for illustration. Even though illustration can be personal or even abstract, the ultimate goal is to tell a story. A painting doesn’t have to say anything and it doesn’t have to function. It simply exists because the artist wants it to. Also, a painting is meant to be seen in person. Illustration is meant to be reproduced and accompany, adorn or package a book, publication or some other massproduced object,” he says. For this issue, Neal created the cover image of Vienna, a side view of the iconic Schönbrunn Palace. In his typical style, it captures something both literal and ephemeral — an apt response to a city that cloaks its gilded past beneath a busy present.
