What is known is that beginning in October, Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts is mounting an exhibit titled “The Postcard Age: Selections from the Leonard A. Lauder Collection.” In 2010, Lauder donated the collection to the MFA and now, for the ﬁrst time, 400 European and American postcards from 1890 through World War I will be on view in the exhibit and in its companion book, “Messages from the Postcard Age” (MFA Publications). “The size, the depth, the range and the quality of the collection is just extraordinary,” says Benjamin Weiss, the MFA’s Leonard A. Lauder Curator of Visual Culture. Weiss, along with co-curator Lynda Klich, worked closely with Lauder to select each of the postcards, which are arranged by theme and cover subjects including advertising, politics, art and architecture, aviation, ethnography, inventions like the electric light bulb and, inevitably, vacation spots — all teased out on tiny pieces of card stock. It was the 140-character message of its era. But underpinning all, says Weiss, is the concept of the postcard as an artistic medium. Blanche-noir, 1920s, by F.
