Wellness 20s In your teens and 20s, protection is the name of the game. “Preventing sun damage is the key to beautiful skin for the rest of your life,” says Daisye Suduran, spa director at The Ritz-Carlton, New Orleans. “Start using broad-spectrum sunscreen now, and wear sunglasses to prevent lines in your forehead from squinting.” And steer clear of tanning beds, considered among the most dangerous carcinogens by the World Health Organization. “One session in a tanning bed can be the equivalent of seven sunburns,” explains Sherrie Huebner, spa director at The Ritz-Carlton Lodge, Reynolds Plantation, who suggests trying a self-tanner or spray tanning session instead. Other habits to avoid or nip in the bud now are smoking and sipping beverages through a straw, both of which, Huebner points out, contribute to fine lines around the mouth. The most common skin complaint during these years is acne, but a cleansing routine incorporating a salicylic acid wash, such as Murad Clarifying Cleanser, which also contains irritation-calming green tea extract and menthol, should help keep breakouts at bay. And while the urge to root out a bothersome blackhead or stubborn cyst on your own is tempting, leave extraction to trained estheticians, as attempts are likely to prolong the natural healing process and may lead to infection or scarring. 30s Your 30s are typically when signs of aging begin to manifest, and it becomes time to think damage control. Add an eye cream that promotes healthy cells to your daily routine, advises Huebner, preferably an antioxidant serum containing vitamin C and ferulic acid. Although many of the most effective beauty treatments can and should only be performed within a spa or medical facility, recent years have seen remarkable progress on the home-treatment technology front. While less dramatic than what’s possible with more powerful spa equipment, results delivered by some at-home devices can be noticeable enough to make the investment worthwhile. One example involves LED therapy, which uses light to stimulate collagen production, kill acnecausing bacteria and promote cell rejuvenation. Kristin Carpenter, director of Eau Spa by Cornelia at The Ritz-Carlton, Palm Beach, which offers light enhancement therapy procedures, recommends the Baby Quasar Red therapy system for betweenvisit boosters. To see and maintain results, says Carpenter, use the device a few minutes a day consistently for eight weeks. Of course, there are low-tech elements from a spa experience that one can re-create at home. “Make a healthy spa beverage to sip and enjoy by simply adding slices of cucumber, strawberries and mint to a pitcher of water,” suggests Suduran from The Ritz-Carlton, New Orleans. “Even just a soak in the tub can be made special by adding some healing Epsom salts or your favorite bubble bath. Light candles and close your eyes and let the tension from the day melt away.” She also recommends playing relaxing music while driving or stressed out.
