WELLNESS 40s In your 40s, hormones begin to play a key role in your day-to-day life and can create frustrating skincare issues. As oil production decreases and regeneration of skin cells slows down, skin becomes dry and dull. To combat this, Carpenter suggests adding serum and peptides to your skincare regimen and continuing light therapy, along with an exfoliation and hydrating mask once a week. Look for products rich in hyaluronic acid. At this stage, higher-strength retinol products are also a good idea, notes Carpenter, who recommends the ZO Skin Health line by Zein Obagi, M.D. “It contains one of the purest forms approved by the FDA without a prescription,” she says. For those plagued by puffy eyes, Suduran recommends the time-tested, simple home remedies of applying cucumber slices or chilled tea bags, along with plenty of rest. Pair your beauty regimen with overall health and well-being practices, such as meditation, Pilates or yoga. PAIR YOUR BEAUTY REGIMEN WITH OVERALL HEALTH AND WELL-BEING PRACTICES, SUCH AS MEDITATION, PILATES OR YOGA. 50s As we grow older, our skin becomes thinner and starts to lose elasticity. To accommodate skin sensitivity during this time, Carpenter advises slowing down the use of retinol. Instead, she suggests adopting a daily regimen from the ZO Skin Health line: Oclipse Sunscreen + Primer SPF 30 with moisturizer, followed by a nighttime routine interchanging Ossential Growth Factor Serum and Ossential Radical Night Repair Plus under Ommerse Overnight Recovery Crème, rounded off with a weekly cycle with Offects Exfoliating Polish. To maintain beautiful hands and nails between manicures, Suduran advises using cuticle cream daily, removing polish after a week, and applying a nail strengthener such as OPI Nail Envy. Exfoliate your hands weekly and apply lotion daily, more if you wash your hands frequently. To keep feet soft and smooth between trips to the salon, fi le your feet weekly, exfoliate weekly and avoid leaving toes polished more than four weeks at a time. “A dollop of Creative Nail Design Cucumber Heel Therapy cream once a week can keep heels smooth, but for heels that are extremely dry and cracked, apply Vicks VapoRub to your feet and cover with socks before bed,” Suduran says. 60s “Frequent massages are always good,” Suduran says, “but especially now, to help promote healthy circulation, ease aches and pains, reduce stress and create consistent sleep patterns.” Another weapon Suduran recommends adding to the arsenal is a microcurrent device such as the NuFace handheld home-treatment system. Used diligently, these machines help increase collagen and elastin production and combat sagging and puffi ness by stimulating facial muscles with lowlevel electrical currents. Flexibility and mobility become increasingly important in your 60s. “Pilates is low-impact, for those that suffer from joint pain or arthritis, to build up the oh-so-important core,” Carpenter says. “A Pilates mat or on certified equipment is a great way to stretch and strengthen muscles and build the core. It’s like the old saying, a body in motion tends to stay in motion.” Discover other tips and treatments used at The Ritz-Carlton Spas, as well recommended skincare products, at . / 70 W W W.
