Guests at The Ritz-Carlton, Santiago can also sample the region’s best varietals at 100º, the hotel’s sleek new wine bar. Viña Indómita Indómita grows red grapes in the Maipo Valley and white grapes in the Casablanca Valley, which gives way to a wide production of cabernets, pinot noirs, chardonnays and other varieties. Their state-of-the-art winery is located in Casablanca, just 45 minutes away from Santiago. The on-site restaurant is known for serving creative Chilean dishes. 56-32-215-3900; indomita.cl Viña Casa Silva Located in the heart of the Colchagua Valley — one hour and 30 minutes away from Chile’s capital — Casa Silva is known for producing terriﬁc carménère and for offering great views of the Andes. The winery has its own rodeo arena and rodeo team. 56-72-710-180; casasilva.cl Viña VIK You might have to get up early to get there — it’s about a three-hour drive from Santiago — but it will be well worth it. The winery began just eight years ago in the Millahue Valley, known among indigenous groups as the “Place of Gold,” and is known for its blends of cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon, syrah, merlot and carménère grapes. After the tasting, you can go horseback riding or trekking. 56-2-248-2218; vik.cl NICOL A S FIGUEROA and Américo Vespucio, the Museo de la Moda features an exhaustive fashion collection — more than 10,000 pieces, from 16thcentury frocks to 1980s bathing suits — in the family home of a Chilean textile tycoon. Highlights include the bustier Jean Paul Gaultier designed for Madonna and a jacket that once belonged to John Lennon. Up the street on Calle Espoz, Galería Patricia Ready is a magnet for collectors in the market for work by wellestablished and emerging Chilean talent as well as the occasional foreign artist; in 2011 the gallery held an impressive exhibit by Spanish sculptor Eduardo Chillida. Both these spaces have wellappointed restaurants. The leafy enclave of Vitacura is by no means representative of the city as a whole, but it does offer a welcome degree of tranquility for mulling over a place that has seen so much. No, there is no “there” here in Santiago, but that may be what makes it such an utterly original city, where history, art and politics overlap and coexist in the most unexpected ways.
