culture F For much of its history, Sichuan was a culture apart. Though it formed a part of the Chinese empire, its distance from the eastern capitals allowed it to develop a character all its own. The Wuhou Shrine, a vast temple dedicated to a military leader and imperial adviser who lived in second century B.C., remains one of Chengdu’s premier attractions (not least because one approaches it along the Jinli Ancient Street, a network of atmospheric little lanes crammed with shops and snack stalls). At Shu Feng Ya Yun Sichuan, you can catch Sichuan opera, a local variant of Beijing opera that is more play-like (and maybe a bit easier to follow) and features a famous “face-changing” trick whereby performers alter their makeup in the blink of an eye. Not all of Chengdu’s culture is so traditional: Around Sichuan University, one of China’s best, you can find young, creative people who are always up on the latest trends (reggae, fixedgear bikes).
