Ritz-Carlton Magazine - Fall 2013 - (Page 36)

Editor’s lEttEr ON t he ROad Above: Yet another Chinese city is luring global travelers in search of adventure: Chengdu. I Indulgence comes in many forms, not least of which is cake. Not long ago, I had the good fortune of tasting all 20 cakes competing for the title of The Ritz-Carlton’s signature dessert (“Cake-Off!” page 128). It was a close race, with each contender more extraordinary than the next; I’m not proud to admit I had to chase all that richness down with a big salad. In my case, sweets, decadent as they may be, come second to the pleasures of travel. In this issue of The Ritz-Carlton Magazine we also indulge in the treasures of the capital of Sichuan Province, where The Ritz-Carlton, Chengdu has debuted (“Ancient Pleasures,” page 104). You don’t have to go far in this Chinese city to take in its scenic beauty, rich cultural scene and especially its exceptional cuisine — your next outstanding meal might just be right around the corner here, whether in a market or in one of the outstanding restaurants in the new hotel. I am writing this letter from Shanghai and can’t help but be impressed by the dynamic spirit and grandeur of this fast-evolving country. From China, we head to the always beautiful island of St. Thomas, where the bounty of the 36 w w w. r i t z c a r lt o n . c o m Caribbean takes center stage through the familyfriendly Ambassadors of the Environment program by Jean-Michel Cousteau (“Sunny Side Up,” page 88). We also take in the natural treasures of Oman, especially those that await under the sea (“Uncharted Territory,” page 98). To send you off in style, we explore yet another form of extravagance — chic fashion options, this time inspired by Manhattan’s autumnal days, classic skyline and new public bike program (“Spin City,” page 118). We’re so lucky to have so much to see and enjoy in this world. Wherever you choose to go this season, I hope your travels are sweet — and a little indulgent. Jamie M.
