Centennial has a dazzling variety of terrain that spills 2,000 vertical feet on each side of the chair, through terrain that is ideal for powder, bumps, tree-skiing, cruising and, of course, racing. The ski-racing gene, doubly gifted to the kids, has not skipped this generation. The kids end up working the Nastar course into each lap on Centennial, laps that reveal the extraordinary variety served by this one lift. A dive into the tight trees, turns and banks of Stickline empties us into the gentle Nastar autobahn, then leads us onto the steeper-than-I-remembered final pitch of Centennial. Commandeering every bit of composure to carve decent turns down it, I am satisfied that “family-friendly” can accommodate serious chops. From here, in the heart of Beaver Creek, we have options. We can go tubing, or ice-skating in the village, or take a break for snacks and drinks by the fire pit. In my, uh, maturity, I appreciate hot cocoa served at the top of the lift and fresh cookies that are delivered slope-side at the end of the day. Before I can even suggest any such diversion we are back on Centennial, this time continuing on to the very top of the mountain for the final, must-have footage of the day — a nonstop down Birds of Prey. The classic World Cup downhill is also the crown jewel of the five courses that will play host to the 2015 World Alpine Ski Championships, a three-peat for Vail/Beaver Creek. I competed in them in 1989, watched them while pregnant in 1999 and hope to be here again 2015 (a date I already know will arrive in an eye blink), this time with the two very eager boys who stand poised atop the run, camera ready. The cameraman’s final instructions to his stuntman are simple: “Just don’t stop!” Smiling, I casually follow on “Flyway” flats. Over the precipitous “Brink,” my skis are speed-wobbling through drifts of cut-up snow, and the kids are barely visible. I catch up halfway down, where they have paused to wipe some powder off the lens. “You might want to slow it down a little ... .” They push off again, pretending not to hear, but the cameraman shouts back, “It’s all for the cause, Mom!” and disappears in a vapory powder trail. From behind I hear my husband laughing, knowing that my only part in this movie will be that audio plea. But that’s OK.
