It's then that The Ritz-Carlton crew kicked into high gear, orchestrating what Mr. W later described as "an incredible display of teamwork" and a chain of events that were, in Mr. W's words, "nothing short of remarkable." The Process Though he was not optimistic about the likelihood of finding "a needle in a hotel haystack," Mr. W was delighted when the first employee he alerted, a member of the stewarding staff, instantly contacted his superiors to begin the task. Next, the hotel's head of security, Gerardo Flores, offered to review the past few hours of security footage to determine where the cup may have ended up. Word also spread to meetings and special events manager Edel Taylor, a three-year veteran of the hotel, and Christian Schreiner, who came to the property after about eight years with the company. "Immediately," remembers Schreiner, "the answer jumped in my head. 'Well, it's gone to the trash because the room has been cleared.'" Still, the pair decided to await word from Flores before resorting to the likely end game: sifting through the mounds of trash in the hotel's dumpsters. Flores soon reported that, unfortunately, the registration table sat just outside the range of his cameras' cleanest pictures and, therefore, provided no leads. With that, Schreiner removed his blazer, donned a pair of industrial-strength latex gloves and made his way to the bowels of the hotel and the large metal dumpsters contained therein. The Resolution Peeking his head over the receptacle's edge and peering through the bags' translucent exterior, Schreiner was able to identify garbage from the morning's event. Next up? "I had to pretty much jump in there," he says. He sought out bags that seemed to contain relatively uncontaminated coffee cups, and on only his second dip into a sack of debris, he pulled out a winner: that never-before-used, bright-blue Ritz-Carlton coffee cup - filled with the cache of perfectly clean business cards. The Aftermath Thinking the cards a lost cause, Mr. W had just left the hotel when he was alerted that they had been found. Overjoyed, Mr. W returned to claim them - and to thank the man who'd stopped at nothing to find them. Looking back, however, it was the misguided intern who Schreiner remembers as the most appreciative. For her part, Taylor is sure Mr. W will never let his interns mishandle important documents again. "We told him to forget disposable coffee cups.
