Incorporating furnishings like plush sofas, comfy armchairs and chic coffee tables elevates your décor and creates a cozy lounge area that allows for mingling. "A living room-like lounge is always fun to design," says Leah McCall, creative director of Whimsical Gatherings. "It gives you the opportunity to convey your style so that your guests can socialize in a relaxed, yet personalized, setting." Designate your lounge near the dining area or dance floor to enhance the flow between spaces, and use your venue's elements to decorate. "Utilize your location's layout and work in your event's style or theme to keep the look cohesive," says Pablo Oliveira, president of Nuage Designs. "Incorporating details from your table settings, for example, helps balance the floor plan and concept." You can also pay homage to your background by adding traditional furnishings that represent your culture. "Using family heirlooms is a huge trend right now," says Oliveira. "It helps tell your story as a couple." Tie the look together with patterned wall coverings or larger elements such as mirrors, potted trees and accent props. "Be sure to make a smooth transition between your reception area and lounge space," says Laura Fox, senior manager of catering sales at The Ritz-Carlton, Boston Common.
