When consulting with couples, stationery designer Viola Sutanto of Chewing the Cud requests that they bring her items of sentimental interest. She inquires about unusual gifts they’ve given each other, as well as childhood memories. She asks the usual questions too, like the couple’s favorite colors. But she doesn’t stop there. “Anyone can have a pink-and-brown wedding,” Sutanto says. “But what’s a good way to make it your pink-and-brown wedding?” Drawing on her design school and corporate design experience, she takes the information they provide and represents it through evocative materials, typography, colors and other subtleties, extending the theme from the invitation to all the other printed collateral.
