For Turkish brides, The henna parTy is a girls’ nighT ouT To remember
For brides around the world, the joy of marriage can be tinged with nostalgia for the end of an era — a goodbye to the single life and another step toward adulthood. In Turkey, tradition honors this moment with the ultimate female-bonding experience: kina gecesi, or henna night. Typically held on the eve of the wedding, the party is attended by the bride’s closest women friends and family members, who join together for dancing, singing, eating and dyeing their hands with henna. Custom holds that coins be pressed into the henna and the hands wrapped until the dye is set, but many modern brides opt for more lavish designs in classic Ottoman Empire style. The beautiful motifs fade slowly, sending an intricately patterned signal to all that a woman is recently married.
