In one corner, wearing the red trunks, we have the ever-intimidating heavyweight cancer, which goes up against nearly 1.4 million Americans for the first time each year. And in the other corner, wearing blue, we have a 45-year-old woman who’s an amateur fighter. She sure looks nervous stepping into the ring. To win the fight, she’s going to need to think quickly on her feet and make some wise food choices. I spoke with her trainer earlier today, and he had the following remarks: “Cancer may be a scary opponent, but she’ll do great. I told her to just take it one step at a time out there.” Making the right food decisions in the following five rounds may help any amateur knock out cancer before the bell even rings. Milk, on the other hand, can be low in calories (buy lowfat or fat-free brands) and is rich in calcium, protein and vitamin D. “Milk can help in the prevention of breast cancer,” says Roberta Anding, M.S., R.D., L.D., a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association. Milk’s effects on other types of cancer are being studied, she says. “Who knows, we could find out five years from now that it helps prevent prostate or other types of cancer too.” If breast cancer protection is what you’re seeking, you may want to stick with cow’s milk.
