The nonprofit Centura system encompasses 12 hospitals, eight senior living facilities, Flight For Life Colorado and Centura Health at Home, which includes home care, hospice, infusion, home medical equipment and oxygen services. In recent years, Sister Pat and the St. Anthony North team have: • Helped facilitate Growing Home, a program providing homeless families in the north metro area with the transitional services they need to reestablish a place of residence. • Hosted annual 9Health Fairs, drawing upward of 800 citizens each year. • Worked closely with Arupe High School, serving as a work site where students can earn tuition dollars and gain insight into health careers. • Informed citizens about the role of and need for advanced directives, “a conversation that needs to happen before someone arrives in the emergency department,” the certiﬁed chaplain and veteran educator says. • Established bimonthly candlelight memorial services for families who have lost loved ones. St. Anthony North’s active commitment to meeting unmet needs dovetails precisely with her Sisters of Charity legacy, Sister Pat explains. “During the Civil War, more than half of our order served on the front lines. Our Sisters also opened one of the nation’s ﬁrst homes for unwed mothers in Cincinnati. Ours is a tradition of ‘radical service.’” Drawn to the order 44 years ago, she says she can trace her interest in caring ministry to childhood experiences in Northern Africa, where her father was an Air Force pilot. “I began noticing how people lived out their religion and I thought, ‘That’s what it’s all about.’ “When people come to the hospital, their life ﬂashes in front of them,” she says. “We can’t take away what they’re going through … it’s their journey.
