JOB DESCRIPTION: Unlike that toy hospital, real hospitals need lights, running water, heating and cooling, paging systems, alarms and elevators. That means they need skilled tradespeople like plumbers and electricians. As a skilled tradesperson in a hospital, you’ll likely deal with a lot of the same problems you would outside of hospital walls. But, Bentley says, “if you are an electrician and you get sent to a patient’s room to work, you need to feel comfortable. You need to know what to ask and what not to ask.” In this way, hospital-speciﬁc requirements and performance expectations may be more nuanced or regulated than they would be for a tradesperson outside of healthcare. Dietitians are key players on hospital healthcare teams, especially for patients with kidney disease, hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, cancer or eating disorders, says Marilyn K. Dietitians tailor diets to suit individual patient’s nutritional needs, and then become part coach, part cheerleader as they encourage patients to turn these diets into permanent lifestyle habits. Additionally, Bentley says, “as more and more hospitals expand their emphasis on patient empowerment, they’re increasingly adding sections of patient information.” Someone has to organize and supervise all that information, and that person is a medical librarian.
