beating the multi-specialty lung clinic offers a faster path to treatment and a better chance for a cure clock how can we help? by carla carwile T he medical image that ﬁrst detected three small dark spots on Billy Rogers’ lower lung wasn’t a chest X-ray. It was part of the scan the 80-yearold retired engineer has had performed regularly after he was treated for prostate cancer. “I guess they checked a little far north,” Rogers says with a chuckle. Good thing, too. A biopsy revealed one of the three spots was cancer. Upon hearing the news, Rogers’ stepdaughter, Dixie Enger, told him of the Multispecialty Lung Clinic (MSLC) at St. Anthony Central Hospital and insisted they seek care there. Working in quality resources at St. Anthony Central, Enger knew the caliber of the physicians involved and appreciated the convenience the coordinated clinic offered. “I explained that we would have the all physicians at one time and in one place,” she says. “Having to see one doctor and then wait six weeks for another appointment would have been so stressful.” At the MSLC, Rogers was seen by radiologist Jeffrey Moulton, M.D., critical-care physician/pulmonologist Thomas Bost, M.D., and surgeon Jeffrey Cross, M.D. After consulting with oncologists, the specialists determined a surgical treatment plan was optimal. It proved successful. “I still say we had such an excellent outcome because we found the problem as early as we did,” Rogers says, “and thanks to the MSLC Clinic, we were able to move forward fast.” Candidates for the MSLC include individuals who • Smoke now or have previously smoked • Have a history of exposure to secondhand smoke • Work or have previously worked in an environment that exposes the lungs to irritants • Have a persistent cough or hoarseness • See blood in sputum (phlegm) during coughs • Have had an abnormal chest X-ray • Have unexplained chest pain location and hours Clinics are held on the first and third Wednesdays of each month in the radiation oncology unit at St. Anthony Central Hospital, just across from the main parking garage. Appointments are scheduled from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. and patients may consult with up to four specialists during that time. Following these morning appointments, the physicians hold a noon conference where the best treatment options for each individual patient are discussed and a treatment plan is decided upon.
