Knowing the critical need for ample blood supplies, two retired St. Anthony Central Hospital nurses have made that every-eight-weeks schedule a volunteer priority. In 1957, Georgia Bell was a young nurse in training at St. Anthony Central Hospital. Her instructor in recovery room care was Lucille Rush, a 1944 graduate of St. Anthony’s nursing school and a Navy nurse veteran from WWII. Fifty-one years later, the two women are again working together—now helping host St. Anthony Central Hospital’s bimonthly blood drives for Bonfils Blood Center. The attentive volunteers are constants for staff and friends of the hospital who regularly donate—offering snacks, juice and conversation during their brief postdonation recovery period. former nurses and co-workers cross paths again as volunteers at the bonfils blood drive T St. Anthony Central Hospital, St. Anthony North Hospital and Avista Adventist Hospital are part of Centura Health, Colorado’s largest healthcare system. The nonprofit Centura system encompasses 12 hospitals, eight senior living facilities, Flight For Life Colorado and Centura Health at Home, which includes home care, hospice, infusion, home medical equipment and oxygen services. Rush returned from military service with plans to study Lucille Rush and Georgia Bell anesthesiology under the G.I. Bill. But life had other plans for the vivacious woman. She met and married her husband, Frank, in 1948, raised three children and returned to St. Anthony Central, where she worked 21 years in Recovery. In 1974, Rush was named Nurse of the Year for District 20. The following year, she was honored with the hospital’s Franciscan Award. “I retired in 1985 when Frank’s health began failing,” Rush says, “and I’ve volunteered here at the hospital for 23 years.” She has served with the postanesthesia care unit team for 12 years and with the blood drive for the past 10. Rush also sits on the board of directors for the hospital’s volunteer program and is its nominating chairperson. Bell, a single parent, worked as a research technician at University Hospital before retiring. She then volunteered with the Hospice of St. John and several nursing homes before a friend encouraged her to return to the workforce as a concierge with the Hyatt Hotel. Bell’s time at Hyatt earned her worldwide travel privileges with trips to 20 different Hyatt Hotel properties. Today she volunteers in the gift shop at St. Anthony Central Hospital as well as serving as a regular blood drive host. “I enjoy it so much,” she says. “I always get such good energy from the people there.” Michelle Lowry, community donor representative for Bonfils Blood Center, salutes Bell and Rush for their commitment. “These two ladies are a valuable part of the St. Anthony blood drive. They have really been very helpful in encouraging our donors to sign up for subsequent drives. With every drive helping about 135 patients, this is a very important partnership.” PRODUCTION Editorial V.P./Creative Director: Beth Tomkiw Editors: Jeff Ficker, Shelley Flannery, Kelly Kramer, Matt Morgan, Amanda Myers, Kari Redfield, Jill Schildhouse Copy Editor: Cindy Hutchinson Design Managing Art Director: Lisa Altomare Art Directors: Erica Brooks, Monya Mollohan, Kay Morrow, Tami Rodgers Production Senior Production Manager: Laura Marlowe Ancillary Production Managers: Tanya Clark, Angela Liedtke Imaging Specialist: Dane Nordine Prep Specialists: Julie Fong, Sonia Washington Circulation V.P./Database Marketing: Patrick Kehoe Postal Affairs & Logistics Director: Joseph Abeyta ClIENT sERvICEs V.P./Sales and Product Development: Chad Rose, 888-626-8779 V.P./Strategic Marketing: Heather Burgett Group Publisher: Russell Cherami Strategic Marketing Team: Brady Andreas, Robyn LaMont, Barbara Mohr, Andrea Parsons, Jaime Ward ADvERTIsINg sAlEs Advertising sales Representatives New York: Phil Titolo, Publisher, 212-626-6835 Phoenix: Soliteir Jaeger, Associate Publisher, 888-626-8779 Mail Order: Bernbach Advertising Reps, 914-769-0051 ADMINIsTRATION Vim & Vigor Founder: J.
