NMMC-Iuka received two VHA Leadership Awards, honoring the hospital for meeting or exceeding national performance standards for clinical care and quality. NMMC-Iuka is the only hospital in Mississippi to have received these national awards for clinical excellence and patient satisfaction. NMMC-Hamilton, Ala., received an award for clinical excellence. “It is an honor for our team to be recognized for the extraordinary results for physician and nurse communication, pain management, responsiveness of staff and preparing patients to go home,” says NMMC-Hamilton administrator Donald Jones. “We work hard to show our commitment to the community, and evidence of success is represented by this award.” VHA serves more than 1,400 not-for-proﬁt hospitals and more than 24,000 non-acute health care organizations nationwide. NMMC-Iuka and NMMC-Hamilton were two of only 38 VHA member organizations to receive a 2009 Leadership Award for Clinical Excellence. “The recognition of these awards are conﬁrmation of the high value our team places on quality and the positive outcomes for caring and curing we seek for our patients,” said NMMC-Iuka administrator Fred Truesdale Jr. “I am extremely proud of each and every member of our clinical and support staff who earned this recognition.” T Both hospitals received the VHA Clinical Excellence Award for the Patient Experience, which honors hospitals that achieved high scores in all six of these categories: • Doctor communications • Nurse communications • Responsiveness of hospital staff • Pain management • Communications about medications • Discharge instructions “VHA Leadership Award winners demonstrate that excellence can be achieved with the proper focus on quality, safety and patient experience,” said Trent Haywood, M.D., J.D., chief medical ofﬁcer at VHA.
