Gold Medal New multimedia program hits the bull’s-eye in customized performance training Workouts S By EliSE SimS emiprofessional basketball player David Carson of Gary is back on the court after slam-dunking rehabilitation for a knee injury with the help of new software technology, Dartfish®. The same training equipment that has led U.S. Olympic teams to gold, Dartfish is now available at Community Hospital Fitness Pointe®. The program highlights athletic movements then combines them with video feedback to help area athletes rehabilitate injuries quicker and customize their performance training. Using video processing technologies known as SimulCam and StroMotion, the computer program provides instant visual feedback of body movement that can help improve biomechanics, performance and prevent further injury. “I sprained my knee and my physician referred me to Fitness Pointe for physical therapy,” says Carson. “I’m such a visual person. When I saw my ‘before’ and ‘after’ side-by-side on the monitor, I immediately knew what I needed to do. Just seeing it gave me the motivation to continue on with my training.” Dartfish can speed up rehabilitation by pointing out what is being done incorrectly. It measures body movement and places it side-by-side with the proper way. A side-by-side comparison with before and after shots enables patients to view the progress of their treatment and correct incorrect movements, making the healing process quicker. It also tailors an individualized treatment plan for their body. “Patients in physical therapy go through a long healing process, and this technology makes it Semiprofessional basketball player David Carson of Gary is back on the court with the help of new software technology called Dartfish ® used during his rehabilitation for a knee injury. easier,” says Amy Castillo, MPT, board-certified sports specialist at Community Hospital Fitness Pointe. “We’re able to break down our patients’ movements frameby-frame, correct them, and get them on the road to recovery much sooner. In David’s case, he was able to run and spring jump just after two weeks of physical therapy … pain-free. “When they can see it, it is in their mind and they can better understand what the therapist is saying— it reinforces communication with our patients,” Castillo says.
