As A child, my afternoons were spent kicking the soccer ball, dressing up Barbies and, if I was feeling particularly entrepreneurial, working my lemonade stand. Times were simpler then. I didn’t have to worry about work deadlines, traffic or utility bills. It was easier to let my mind wander when there were no obligations clouding it. But growing up doesn’t have to mean growing out of playtime. In fact, finding ways to let loose as adults allows us to enjoy the same feel-good, carefree attitudes we once did as children—while keeping our minds sharp. “Research indicates that play can help you relax, enhance creativity and can stimulate curiosity,” says Share DeCroix Bane, Ph.D., chair of the Mental Health and Aging Network. “You allow for a different part of the mind to function in a different way other than what it would do on a daily basis.” Playful activities even can help with problem solving, improve brain function, alleviate stress and improve social skills, according to the American College of Sports Medicine.
