Who Is Your Community Healthcare System receives Fire Starter award for excellence Spark? W ho is your spark? For all of us, there has been or is someone who keeps us going and inspires us to do our best. For the hospitals of Community Healthcare System, that spark comes from the people we serve. That service has earned Community Healthcare System the Fire Starter of the month award for operational excellence by the Studer Group®. This distinction is awarded to healthcare organizations across the United States that demonstrate marked improvements in patient satisfaction, employee workplace experience and reinvestment into their respective communities. In January of 2007, the three not-for-profit acute care hospitals—Community Hospital in Munster, St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago and St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart—set out to cultivate greater operational excellence under the guidance of Florida-based consulting firm the Studer Group. The three hospitals, which were brought together under a single ownership in 2001, were looking for ways to make Community Healthcare System a better place for patients to receive care, for physicians to practice medicine and for employees to work. Progress is being By Marie Forszt measured based on five areas of improvement: service, people, quality, finance and growth. Incorporating many of the Studer Group’s training tools and programs, staff at all three hospitals improved inpatient satisfaction scores, lowered employee turnover rates and achieved higher quality and operational goals. “The Fire Starter award serves as an acknowledgment of the unified effort by our physicians and employees to take our hospitals to a higher level of care,” says John Gorski, chief operating officer of Community Healthcare System. “It’s the type of care we all would want—for ourselves and for our family members.” Since initiating the journey to operational excellence, Community Healthcare System’s goal has been to go above and beyond to connect with patient priorities and achieve service excellence.
