HEAD Stop the Stress Even when faced with stressful times, you can take a few actions to better manage the effects. Marianne Barnes, M.D., a psychiatrist at NMMC’s Behavioral Health Center, suggests the following: RElax. It’s important to unwind. Try yoga, meditation, reading a book or listening to soothing music. SpEND TIME Solo. Set aside at least 15 minutes daily to do something for yourself, such as taking a walk or writing in a journal. SET lIMITS. Don’t be afraid to say no to requests for your time. EaT RIgHT. Fuel your body with protein, such as chicken or peanut butter, whole grains and fruits and vegetables. gET MovINg. physical activity helps boost your mood, thanks to chemicals called endorphins that your body releases after a workout. pHoNE a FRIEND. a companion who can lend an ear will help remind you that you’re not alone, and may even provide useful advice.
