Community Briefs healthcare heroines receive honors D Outstanding nurses at heart of healing ay in and day out, nurses help fulfill Community Healthcare System’s mission to serve by providing quality, compassionate care for our patients. Each hospital salutes this dedication and excellence during National Nurses Week. Here are just a few examples of the extraordinary people who practice the art of healing every day at our hospitals. Masters of Caring in Munster At Community Hospital, Cyndi Branson, certified nursing assistant, received the Remarkable Image of Caring Award, and Michele Huebner, registered nurse, received the Nursing Excellence Award. The Image of Caring Award nomination for Bransonstates,“Shealways knows the right thing to say at the right time. She is always happy and more than willing to help.” Pillars of strength in hobart At St. Mary Medical Center, outstanding nurses are recognized with Nursing Pillar Awards in categories of service, people, growth, quality and finance. The Nursing Award–Service has been presented to Sue Chandler of 3 West. The Nursing Award–People has been given to Donna Wasko of the cardiovascular unit. For Growth, the Nursing Award has been presented to Connie Behling of 5 West. The Nursing Award-Quality has been presented to Rose Schmelter of surgery, and the Nursing Award-Finance has been given to Kristin By Elise Sims Stok of 6 West. exCellenCe in east ChiCago St. Catherine Hospital’s Nursing Excellence Award recipient is Kathy Vanek, a medical/surgical nurse clinician on 5 West and an educator for 38 years. As a nurse clinician, Vanek is qualified to perform many of the same patient care duties that a physician performs. Vanek’s peers nominated her for this prestigious award based upon key characteristics of nursing excellence in areas of leadership, dignity, compassionate care, community, quality and stewardship—elements matching the hospital’s mission and values.
