You We’re Here for T Two new programs join a range of supportive services at NMMC Cancer Center, all designed to help patients cope with their cancer diagnosis and beyond he time following a cancer diagnosis can be distressing and confusing. At the North Mississippi Medical Center Cancer Center in Tupelo, several resources are available to help guide you through decision making, the treatment process and recovery. NMMC recently teamed up with the American Cancer Society to create an embedded volunteer program. Volunteers trained by both NMMC and ACS are available to help patients undergoing treatment find the resources they need. “We are excited about this new program,” says Paula Turner, Cancer Center director. “These volunteers undergo intense training, and they will be available to help patients with everything from how to fill out grant forms and Medicaid resource forms to doing research on their diagnosis in our resource library.” In addition, the ACS volunteers keep the Joyce B. Atwell Resource Center at the Cancer Center fully stocked with the most up-to-date cancer information. The resource center houses a collection of information, including magazines, medical journals, reference books, periodicals, audio- and videotapes, and DVDs. A computer is available for patients and family members to do research, and the Cancer Center is a Wi-Fi hot spot. “This new program will help expand the ‘arsenal’ we already have to help our patients,” Turner says. Another new service offered at the NMMC Cancer Center is the Nutrition Support Group, held the first Tuesday of each month at 10 a.m. and the last Thursday at 2 p.m. “It is so important for patients undergoing cancer treatment to get the kind of nutrition they need,” says Rachel Wood, registered dietitian at the Cancer Center. “This group will help answer any questions patients have as well as encourage them to eat a healthy diet.” Vim & Vigor • Fall 2 011 Other support services at the NMMC Cancer Center include: BarBershop Talk This collaborative community program between the NMMC Cancer Center and area barbers targets African-American men and provides educational information on early screenings for prostate and colon cancers. It meets at 6 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month at the NMMC-Tupelo North Education Center. For more information, call 662-377-4077.
