ONLiNE Try: A spin or dance class Why it will work: Matching your workout to your energy level will get you superior results. Anytime you’re feeling particularly motivated, take full advantage of it. On those days, sign up for that high-intensity spin class or take Zumba, a Latininspired dance class. Or take any activity you enjoy to that next level. Really giving it your all when you’re feeling good will help make up for those lazier days. ENERGETIC IF YOU’RE: Our staff of fitness experts will help you develop a custom program to help you on your way to a more active lifestyle. Late afternoon, says the American Council on Exercise, but the reason is more complicated than you think. The council’s website reports that the best time of day to work out is when your body temperature is at its highest, which for most of us tends to be in the late afternoon. Exercising during this time means you may have a more productive workout as your muscles are already warm, reaction time is quicker, and strength is at its peak. Of course, that doesn’t mean you should rebuff getting buff if you’re busy most afternoons. What’s important is to find a time that works for you, says Hank Boerner, director of the NMMC Wellness Centers in Tupelo, Pontotoc and Baldwyn. “Some people exercise better in the morning, some in the afternoon. What’s important is that you establish a routine.” UNMOTIVATED IF YOU’RE: Try: Going for a walk Why it will work: Maybe you can’t bear to drag yourself out of bed to brush your teeth, get dressed, drive to the gym and work out, but persuading yourself to slip on some shoes and walk around the block is reasonable. “You don’t even need to walk very fast,” says Matthews. “Just do something to get the blood flowing.” Once you get out there, you may become more motivated. Try varying the speed, Matthews suggests. Walk at a moderate pace for five minutes and then alternate with one minute of power walking. Before you know it, you’ll be strolling around the block a second time, Rodriguez says.
