Community Involvement WOMEN OF ALL AGES can find ways to plug into their community, whether it’s volunteering, serving on a board or joining a club. “When I look back on my life, I see how much my community has done for me, and I understand how essential it is to give back,” Sheubrooks says. “I encourage women to look at their communities and donate their time or talents.” Johnson says she has always been active in volunteering. “I’ve helped with elections, sang in my church choir and helped in other organizations from time to time,” she says. “It’s important for women to find something they are passionate about and get involved.” While the goal of volunteering is to help others, it helps you, too. “When you regularly socialize with friends or acquaintances, you stimulate a part of your brain that can potentially generate more brain cells and help reduce the risk of dementia. Staying connected with other people, especially later in life, also increases emotional satisfaction,” says Paul D. Nussbaum, Ph.D., a neuropsychologist and spokesman for Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. ADVICE TO TAKE: Whatever amount of time you can give, find a way to contribute to your community. Better yet, get the children involved and plan one day a month when the entire family helps build a house or serves food at a shelter. Pink Ribbon Clinic If you have a significant family history of breast cancer, or risk factors for the disease, you may find peace of mind after visiting a clinic specifically designed for your needs. The High-Risk Breast Clinic serves as an extension of the quality care provided across the system at the Women’s Diagnostic Centers of Community Hospital, St. Catherine Hospital and St. Mary Medical Center. Factors that increase your risk for developing breast cancer include age (over 50), family history, an Ashkenazi Jewish family lineage, certain breast changes, a menstrual period beginning at an early age, going through menopause at a late age, having no children or having your first pregnancy after age 30. Women at elevated risk for breast cancer can call the clinic to schedule an individualized assessment. Other services offered include clinical breast exams, education about breast self-exams, screening tests, education about breast cancer risk, personalized surveillance plans and prevention strategies. The clinic’s staff also provides referrals to valuable resources and supplemental support. CALL A physician’s order is necessary for referral to the High-Risk Breast Clinic, located at the Women’s Diagnostic Center, 10020 Donald Powers Drive in Munster.
