Computers are also changing healthcare as we know it today, as paper-based records are replaced by computer-based records. These digital health records will help us become more efficient, as well as improve patient safety and quality of care. Community Healthcare System is investing more than $40 million to implement a comprehensive electronic medical record system that creates a single, consolidated, electronic record for every patient. Our choice in an electronic medical record system is Epic. Its advanced capabilities will be introduced in stages over the next year, linking our many outpatient offices and Care Network physician practices with our hospitals: Community Hospital, St. Catherine Hospital and St. Mary Medical Center. What are some of the benefits of our new electronic medical record system? • One record. Our healthcare professionals will have access to a more complete record of patient information so they can make the best decisions for patients— at the hospital, in their offices or while on call. This system also will reduce the cost of healthcare by eliminating duplicate testing. • Improved access. With digital health records, information is portable and can be more easily searched and shared with various professionals consulting on a patient’s care. Using a secure online connection, patients will have the ability to e-mail inquiries to physicians and nurses, and to schedule appointments, order medications and even access results of medical tests. • Coordinated care. The entire healthcare team is instantly alerted to critical changes in a patient’s condition as results of tests are posted to the electronic record. It makes data available to the right staff at the right time. Patient privacy and security of health information are a vital part of the system. We look forward to bringing these advances to you over the next year and for years to come as we learn to use this system to its potential. We are committed to building for our patients a safer, more connected healthcare environment.
