Hope Rays of FigHt CanCer Aggressive approach uses tranquil treatment By elise sims A uthor Samuel Butler once said, “Life is like music; it must be composed by ear, feeling and instinct, not by rule.” Those words ring true for 85-year-old Schererville resident Ruth Duncanson. In early 2000, Duncanson was treated for anal cancer. She fought a hard battle to beat it while continuing to volunteer for the Women’s Association of the Northwest Indiana Symphony Society and the League of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, among other nonprofits. “Music is food for the soul,” Duncanson says. What is CyberKnife? Since May 2005, Community Healthcare System doctors have given more than 900 patients, like Duncanson, hope in the form of a radiation therapy called CyberKnife. Complementing CyberKnife at St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago, Community Healthcare System sister hospitals offer other advanced radiation therapy treatment options.
