Opening ThoughTs Top Honors NMHS Receives National Employee Engagement Award Characteristics of an engaged employee The following characteristics are examples of traits of an engaged employee and are desired traits for NMHS employees: • Motivated • Committed to the organization • Involved in their work • Inspiring to others • Supportive of their co-workers • Oriented toward providing good customer service • Possess a strong sense of loyalty • Optimistic about their work goals N orth Mississippi Health Services took high honors in the 2010 HR Solutions Employee Engagement/Opinion Survey Award among a field of 790 companies representing various business sectors across the United States. NMHS, the parent company of North Mississippi Medical Center, received second place in the Highest Actively Engaged Population. The top honor went to AtlantiCare of Egg Harbor Township, N.J. Both NMMC and AtlantiCare are recipients of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. An actively engaged employee chooses to exert discretionary effort to provide better outcomes for patients, customers and the organization. An ambivalent employee is uncertain whether to exert the extra effort. These results didn’t just happen. We have processes in place that encourage our employees to be engaged. This award is great external validation that we’re focused on the right things. Our Critical Success Factors (People, Service, Quality, Financial and Growth) define who we are as an organization. Kevin Sheridan, president and CEO of HR Solutions Inc., says, “Their results on the Employee Engagement Survey are firsthand evidence that North Mississippi Health Services is a cut above the rest.” HR Solutions is a Chicago-based human resource firm specializing in employee satisfaction, engagement and exit survey design, implementation, analysis and results. HR Solutions conducted 790 employer-specific surveys, and NMHS’ results were compared with all of them, including 540 healthcare organizations and other past Baldrige recipients. In addition to this award, NMHS achieved the 94th percentile nationally and Best in Class scores in 15 of 18 dimensions on its most recent employee opinion survey. Ninety percent of NMHS’ full-time employees completed the survey in May 2010. NMHS has an annual employee retention rate of 94 percent. Thank you for the opportunity to serve your healthcare needs.
