Our Labor and Delivery nurses are reaching out to new parents and grandparents to raise awareness about the high number of sudden unexpected infant deaths in Lake County, which you can read about on page 4. With increased education, both in the hospital and with free classes, about a baby’s proper sleep environment, Northwest Indiana families are adopting the new recommended guidelines. Cancer patients have unique needs and the Cancer Resource Centre in Munster offers patients and their families free services such as a lending library, support groups and mind-body programs that can bring comfort and help the healing process. A depression support group called Mind Over Matter (page 49) helps patients better identify the negative elements in their lives and find ways to cope. Whether you are at risk and working to prevent heart or lung disease or need rehabilitation after a cardiac event, our experts at St. Mary Medical Center have programs and services to complement your health needs. On page 50, we offer an overview of those programs—for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, peripheral arterial disease screenings, cardiac rehabilitation and more. Varicose veins are not only painful, but they also can lead to other medical complications for some patients. On page 52, we review a variety of treatments that are available at the Vein Clinic of Community Hospital—everything from laser therapy to minimally invasive surgery—to provide a custom-care experience for your individual needs. Preventive and immediate care for the whole family can be found at St. Catherine Hospital’s new outpatient clinic.
