Wolfe, “and represents the significant, rewarding achievements that an entire community can accomplish together.” Adds Jim Maran, Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce president and CEO: “The evolution of GMC’s Heart & Vascular Center, including securing the staterequired certificate of need, the dynamic leadership and community desire that has driven the process, will provide further momentum to other businesses in Gwinnett that are also looking to revolutionize their offerings.” Better For Patients and PHysicians The Heart & Vascular Center will feature two dedicated operating rooms, two additional catheterization labs and the necessary support spaces. Patients will benefit from coronary artery bypass grafting, where blood flow is rerouted through a new artery or vein to increase flow; aortic valve replacement, where the substitution is mechanical or made with bovine tissue; and atrial septal defect repair, which involves patching a hole between the ventricles in the heart. In the operating rooms, multiple monitors allow detailed viewing for the perfusionist, nurse, physician, anesthesiologist and first assistant nurse. Everyone Patient exPerience, First and Foremost As cardiac services at GMC have transformed, processes have been carefully analyzed to support patient care. Physicians were engaged early on to improve patient experience and also promote an inclusive culture and well-rounded decisions. After playing a pivotal role in securing the certificate of need, Manfred Sandler, M.D., continues to be involved as medical director for cardiology services at GMC. David Langford, M.D., is medical director of cardiovascular surgery. Louis I. Heller, M.D., is medical director of the cardiac catheterization laboratory. Staff development joins other processes designed to enhance the patient experience: patient flow, policy establishment, identifying and ordering equipment and supplies, staff education and quality measures development. Meaningful Contributions in addition to lifesaving treatments, Gwinnett medical center’s Heart & Vascular center is providing skilled healthcare professionals the opportunity to work and contribute locally. Gwinnett’s own Wendy moran, who spent time at cleveland clinic and other leading hospitals in the southeast, is now manager of Gmc’s new cardiovascular operating rooms. she is responsible for staff development, development of internal and external patient flow processes, hiring, and quality initiatives. “the opportunity to help build a heart and vascular program by providing input into the equipment, supplies and staff while contributing to my community was professionally meaningful,” moran says.
