CatCh the Spirit! nMMC Honors spirited women Local women go above and beyond in helping others N orth Mississippi Medical Center recently recognized regional Spirit of Women Award recipients, ordinary individuals who do extraordinary things. Each award winner received a framed certificate recognizing her achievement, a bouquet of flowers and a $50 Visa gift card. Other nominees for Young Person Role Model: Lauren Pugh of Tupelo and Kayleigh White of New Albany. deTeRMined To Help Community Hero: debbie wiley, Tupelo Wiley, who volunteers through Comfort Creatures, brings her therapy dog to elementary schools every week to read with struggling students. She and her therapy dog also visit Sanctuary Hospice House every week, and she volunteers for Celebration Village, Salvation Army Angel Tree, Children Closet and Global Outreach International. She also launched English as a Second Language classes at First Baptist Church several years ago to help new residents learn to speak English. Other nominees for Community Hero: Kelly Jo Brewer of Ripley, Mable Grigsby of Tupelo, Rhonda Weaver of Shannon and Salome Williams of Iuka. Raising Money and awaReness Young Person Role Model: Kaitlyn Kinsey, Tupelo Kinsey is studying nursing at Mississippi University for Women in Columbus after two summers as a teen volunteer at NMMC sparked her interest in a nursing career. For her senior project at Tupelo High School in 2010–11, Kinsey focused on Parkinson’s disease, which took her father’s life in 2008. Her Parkinson’s disease awareness walk raised almost $2,000. “She has taken lemons and made lemonade,” her nomination states. “Her father did not survive Parkinson’s, but Kate did not become bitter.” a dose of suppoRT Healthcare Hero: sabrina ganaway, Tupelo Ganaway is a registered nurse and lactation specialist at the NMMC Women’s Hospital in Tupelo. Sabrina always exudes calm and caring, and she even gives new mothers her personal phone number in case they need extra support. As one of Ganaway’s patients commented, “No one could put forth that much effort and go so far above what was expected unless they truly loved what they were doing.” Other nominees for Healthcare Hero: Glenda Brinkley of West Point and Gena Vail of New Albany. a helping hand nMMC presented an additional award to Maggie Caldwell and Rhonda Horton, who co-founded Mama’s got a Brand new Bag, a designer purse auction that raises funds to benefit local women. Maggie Caldwell and for three years, Mama’s got a Brand Rhonda Horton new Bag benefited s.a.f.e. inc., a local domestic violence shelter. This year, the event benefited The fairy godmother project, the brainchild of many philanthropic women in north Mississippi who want to help those who are less fortunate. among their projects, the fairy godmothers provided a bed, linens and pillows for an elderly couple who were both undergoing chemotherapy treatments for cancer and had been sleeping on the floor. The fairy godmother project also bought uniforms for a young mother who graduated from a nursing assistant program but could not afford uniforms for her new job.
