MAKING Busy teens—and adults—can find time for fitness breaks Teens, like many adults, often believe there’s not enough time in their schedules for exercise. As a typical high school student, I know a lot about a busy life. Between classes, extracurricular clubs, family chores and the ever-important social life, where does fitness fit in? TIME FITTING IN FITNESS ORGANIZED SPORTS BY ASHLEY BROOME, TITUSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL JUNIOR I’ve found many ways to incorporate fitness daily. A great time to get active is during TV commercials. Performing crunches, planks, lunges and stretches during those short breaks is a way to fit in exercise without taking time away from anything else. And I can do it in front of the TV before my show starts again. When I get to school I try to find a parking space far from my fi rst class. I can start my day by walking and getting my heart pumping without anyone realizing I’m exercising. I even fi nd fun ways to tone up when I am in class! Sometimes while I’m listening to a lecture or reading a book, I squeeze my abs for 30 seconds, then release. I repeat this 10 times. You will soon notice it gets easier if you do it every day. Find a way to exercise that fits your schedule and that you enjoy. Work It Out The easiest way for a high school student to stay fit is to become involved in a school sport. Every high school offers a variety of sports and activities. The secret is to find the one you will enjoy the most. If you choose a sport you love, your workouts won’t seem like a chore. Do you like to be around a lot of people? Then you may enjoy team sports like football, volleyball or basketball. Do you like oneon-one competition? Golf or tennis may be your game. Do you enjoy challenging yourself with inner goals? Cross-country or track and field is the way to go. Running is my sport because I love being outside. The fi nish line is my goal, and when I’ve crossed it I know I’ve accomplished something. Also being part of a team means you’re working out with friends. Anything I can do with friends is fun, and a fitness activity has now turned into a social time. This will make your workout seem less boring and tedious. You may even forget that exercise is the reason you’re together!
