“Sleep problems among children are greater than anything most people, even many physicians, realized until just the last few years.” [attention deficit hyperactivity disorder] may be chronically sleep deprived and have abnormal REM sleep. In particular, the study puts forward the theory that children may present an intrinsic sleep problem specific to ADHD.” The article quotes Reut Gruber, Ph.D., the study’s lead author, as saying: “I do not believe that sleep per se is the cause of ADHD, but it may make the symptoms worse in children with sleep problems.” Dr. Rivera says physical factors contributing to children’s sleep issues include weight; enlarged tonsils; congenital abnormalities causing large neck circumference, small jaws and craniofacial abnormalities; and other breathing problems (for example, allergies or asthma). Other issues may include parasomnias (nightmares, night terrors, sleepwalking and other such sleep disruptions); nocturnal (sleep-related) seizure disorders; movement disorders (involuntary limb movement); and circadian rhythm disorders (disturbance of the body’s 24-hour biological clock). Diabetes Education Insulin Voucher Program Diabetes is a chronic condition. That means it can’t be cured, but it may be controlled. Part of that control may involve a daily insulin shot to keep blood sugar levels within an accepted range. Now, thanks to a $15,000 grant from the McKesson Foundation, given to the Jess Parrish Medical Foundation and designated for Parrish Medical Center’s Diabetes Education Program, the Insulin Voucher Program will continue. The program provides a one-time, 30-day supply of diabetes medications to individuals without the funds or insurance necessary to provide this medication. Participants are then assisted with finding long-term, alternative sources to fund their medication needs. “The beneficiaries of the Insulin Voucher Program greatly appreciate the loving kindness of the service, knowing they owe nothing in return,” says Kimberly Fischer, manager of PMC’s Diabetes Education Program. “We are grateful to the McKesson Foundation for allowing us to continue this program.” When It’s tIme to Get help The Parrish Sleep Disorders Center can accommodate children ages 1 to 18, seven nights a week. At least one parent is asked to stay the night with the child during the sleep study. “All our sleep center care partners are trained in pediatric sleep,” Dr. Rivera says. “Our objective is to help children and their families improve their lives by enabling children to sleep better.” CAll The PMC Diabetes Education Program is now at 603 N. Washington Ave., Titusville (in the Heart & Health Village building). Call 321-268-6699 to learn about the Diabetes Education Program services, classes and support groups.
