Opening ThoughTs Brevard Is Still Flying High O The space shuttle program may be gone, but the spirit and initiative remain n April 1, 2012, the CBS television newsmagazine 60 Minutes aired a story called “High joblessness in the home of U.S. space flight.” If you didn’t see it, the story, as you might imagine or may have heard, focused on Brevard County. The first reaction of many people to the 60 Minutes story ranged from irritation to anger. The story portrayed Brevard as a dying community. It did not mention the hard work being done and the good things taking place to remake Brevard’s economy. The story’s focus was on how some of the county’s people and businesses have been affected by the end of the space shuttle program and the cancellation of the constellation moon exploration project. There’s no denying all of us in Brevard County have been affected, some much more than others. For more than 50 years Parrish Medical Center has had the privilege of caring for thousands upon thousands of Kennedy Space Center employees and their families. These professionals, whatever their roles, set a standard for space exploration excellence unmatched by any other country. The story’s ending was powerful: “The four remaining shuttles are headed to museums. Atlantis will be on display at the Kennedy Space Center. She was designed for 100 missions but flew only 33. Like so many in Brevard County, Florida, she was pulled from the service of her country, long before she was ready.” With respect to Brevard’s future, it would have been uplifting had the report talked about economic progress made since the close of the shuttle program. But that’s not why they came. We’re hoping—and have asked—that 60 Minutes might return a year from now to see how Brevard County is faring. We think they’ll be surprised. Although the shuttle program was shut down, private sector spaceflight is moving forward. The space business is alive and on the move. There’s no better place in the world than Brevard County to lead that effort and realize its potential. Teams of business and economic development professionals are working nonstop to attract new business and jobs to Brevard. And they are seeing successes. There is almost no limit to the advantages of being in Brevard, among them being the exceptional and award-winning healthcare available to you and your families. We’re hopeful that 60 Minutes will return in 2013 to see how far Brevard has come in its extreme makeover. We’re betting they will be impressed with the accomplishments of the dedicated citizens who are still very much in the game. Betting on Brevard is just good business. Sincerely, J.J.
