What Are My Options?
Most weight-loss surgery is performed using minimally invasive techniques that allow people to go home one or two days after surgery. Your doctor will help you determine which surgery is best for you. According to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, the most common types of weight-loss surgery are: Gastric bypass. The size of the stomach is reduced, and a section of small intestine is bypassed to limit calorie absorption. Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding. To make people feel fuller faster, a band is wrapped around the stomach to form a small pouch that restricts the amount of food that can be eaten. Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch. Similar to gastric bypass, except a sleeve-shaped stomach is created and attached to the final section of the small intestine. Vertical sleeve gastrectomy. The stomach is restricted by stapling and dividing it vertically, reducing the amount of food that can be consumed.
